All these new studies have come out over the past couple years about how awful Sugar is for you. Especially processed white sugar. It is scary! They liken it to cocaine! No wonder we are all addicted to it.
I personally would use up to 12 teaspoons of sugar a day in my coffee, depending on how many cups I would have each day. I averaged 8 teaspoons a day. That adds up quickly if you really think about it.
I heard about this alternative and tried in in a latte and fell in love with the taste. To me it actually wasn’t quite as sweet as sugar, but had a distinct sweet taste all its own. I’m talking about blue agave.
So I went out to the grocery store and bought myself some Organic Blue Agave. I’ve been using this in my coffee for 2 months now. It’s really the only thing I ever use sweeteners in.
Today I got to wondering, how on earth is agave nectar made? What makes it so much better for us? So I did a little research and I was taken by complete surprise.
Agave nectar is actually bad for you. Yes every sweetener is bad for you in some way. However this sweetener makes you fat!!! No joke.
Did you know that agave nectar cannot be processed normally through your digestive system like everything else? It is processed through your liver and completely turned into body fat! It is also astronomically loaded with high fructose syrup! You know the stuff we make sure to keep our kids away from?!
So what on earth are we supposed to use to sweeten our food and drinks? All sweetener is bad for you. In a perfect world we would just bite the bullet and learn to love our coffee without sweetening it. Sorry, I just can’t do that. Coffee is bitter. I love coffee, don’t get me wrong. But I absolutely have to sweeten it some way. So for now, until I can do more research, i am going to be going with Sugar in the Raw. At least it’s better than over processed white sugar!
Hop on over to my Facebook page to watch a great video explaining the benefits and downsides to Agave. It’s a quick little video put out by Scottsdale’s Source of Health Natural Medical Center.
